When Back Pain Needs a Professional, and When It Does Not

Most episodes of back pain settle on their own. Here is how to tell the difference between an ordinary flare and something worth having examined in Grand Junction.

Short answer

Most back pain improves within two to six weeks with movement and sensible loading. Get examined if pain lasts beyond that, travels into a leg, follows a fall or collision, or comes with numbness or weakness.

The ordinary flare

A stiff, sore back after a weekend of yard work or a long drive over the pass is common. It usually eases as you move, feels worse first thing in the morning, and improves noticeably within a week or two.

Bed rest is rarely the answer. Gentle walking, changing position often, and returning to normal activity at a tolerable level tends to shorten the episode rather than lengthen it.

Signs worth an examination

Pain that runs below the knee, tingling or numbness, weakness in the foot or leg, or symptoms that keep coming back on a cycle all point to something more specific than a strained muscle.

Pain that follows a collision or a significant fall is worth checking early, because guarding can mask a problem for several days.

Signs that call for urgent care

Loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness through the groin or inner thighs, or rapidly worsening weakness are emergencies. Go to an emergency department rather than booking a chiropractic appointment.

What an exam actually changes

An examination is not just confirmation that something hurts. Orthopedic and neurological testing narrows down which structure is involved, which determines whether adjusting, decompression, soft tissue work, or a referral is the right next step.
