Understanding

What Bulging Disc Is

A bulging disc extends past the edge of the vertebra around a broad area of its circumference. A herniation, by contrast, means material has pushed through the outer wall at a point.

Bulges show up on imaging in people with no symptoms at all. The question is always whether the finding explains what you are feeling.

Symptoms

What patients commonly describe

Aching that builds over a day rather than arriving suddenly

Stiffness after sitting or driving

Occasional radiating discomfort without constant nerve symptoms

Pain that eases with walking and worsens with prolonged flexion

Contributors

What can contribute

Sustained seated postures

Repetitive forward bending

Reduced motion in the joints above and below

Normal age-related disc changes

How this is evaluated and cared for here

Care follows the examination. Nothing on this page is a treatment recommendation for your case.

The examination looks at how the segment moves, what positions provoke and relieve symptoms, and whether nerve testing is normal.

Care commonly combines adjusting to restore motion, decompression when indicated, and specific guidance for how you sit, lift, and sleep.

FAQ

Common Questions

Is a bulging disc serious?

Often it is not, and it is frequently an incidental finding. Seriousness is judged by symptoms and examination, not by the word on a report.

Will it turn into a herniation?

Not necessarily. Managing load and restoring normal motion is the practical response rather than worrying about a progression that may never happen.

Should I stop exercising?

Usually the answer is to change what you do, not to stop. Specific guidance comes after the examination.
