Understanding

What Neuropathy Is

Peripheral neuropathy describes irritation or damage to nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms often begin in the feet and progress upward.

Diabetes, medications, chemotherapy, thyroid problems, and nutritional factors are among the medical causes, which is why history matters as much as examination.

Symptoms

What patients commonly describe

Burning or electric sensations in the feet, often worse at night

Numbness that makes footing feel unreliable

Pins and needles in the hands

Sensitivity to light touch such as bedsheets

Contributors

What can contribute

Diabetes and blood sugar control

Nerve compression in the spine or at a limb

Certain medications and treatments

Circulation and nutritional factors

When to be seen

Signs that warrant prompt evaluation

Rapidly progressing numbness or weakness, or symptoms following a fall, should be evaluated medically without delay.

Our approach

How this is evaluated and cared for here

Care follows the examination. Nothing on this page is a treatment recommendation for your case.

Evaluation separates spine-related nerve irritation from systemic causes and identifies where co-management with your physician is required.

Where the picture is mechanical, care addresses the involved segments and tissue; laser therapy is also used for symptom relief in appropriate cases.

FAQ

Common Questions

Is neuropathy always from diabetes?

No. Diabetes is a common cause but far from the only one, which is why history and testing come first.

Can chiropractic cure neuropathy?

No such claim is made. Care targets contributing mechanical factors and symptom relief, with referral where medical management is needed.
