Understanding

What Knee Pain Is

Knee pain can come from the joint surfaces, the tendons around the kneecap, the meniscus, or from mechanics further up and down the chain.

Examination checks the knee itself and then how the hip and foot are loading it.

Symptoms

What patients commonly describe

Pain at the front of the knee with stairs or squatting

Aching after activity rather than during it

Swelling that comes and goes

Giving way, catching, or locking

Contributors

What can contribute

Running, hiking, and cycling volume increases

Hip or ankle stiffness changing knee loading

Previous injury that altered mechanics

Degenerative joint change

When to be seen

Signs that warrant prompt evaluation

A knee that locks, gives way repeatedly, or swells rapidly after an injury should be evaluated promptly, and referral is made when a surgical opinion is warranted.

Our approach

How this is evaluated and cared for here

Care follows the examination. Nothing on this page is a treatment recommendation for your case.

The knee is assessed alongside the hip, pelvis, and foot so the plan addresses the cause of the loading, not only the painful spot.

Care can include extremity adjusting, soft tissue therapy, shockwave for tendon pain, and laser therapy for persistent joint irritation.

FAQ

Common Questions

Can chiropractic help knee pain?

It can when the pain relates to joint mechanics, tendon irritation, or loading from the hip and foot. It is not a substitute for surgery when surgery is indicated.

Do you treat arthritic knees?

Conservative care aimed at comfort and function is often appropriate; the imaging finding itself is not reversed.
